#FREESOURCE: Skill Sharing

Submitted by Jonathan Yates on October 26, 2009 – 6:21 pmNo Comment

soloWhen researching for my own like-minded network of free- sourcing individuals, I came across a number of sites purporting to offer free goods and services, which called to mind the sage advice: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!” However, the Freeconomy Community is as true as true can be when it comes to the freesourcing ethic.

This site is based on the fact that we all have skills, time, hardware and assets to share. All you do is register on the site (membership is of course free) and enter your own personal and detailed skill set. There are various elements of the site that you can join to share a particular asset you may have:

  • Skillshare—Share the skills you have and use others’ skills where yours may be lacking.
  • Toolshare—Borrow some tools to get a job done.
  • Spaceshare—Let someone borrow your garage and perhaps an office may be available for your meeting.

Landshare is another initiative that allows you to share any spare land you have with the community for use as an allotment; or to find land offered by others near you on which you could grow fruit and vegetables and get to eat for (almost) free!

If you are lucky enough to have someone share their particular skill with you, then you can offer that skill to someone else. As Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said:

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

However, you must also remember the following from Karl Marx:

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.

You should learn continually from your business experiences.
